What Tyler Seguin, Matt Duchene, and Mason Marchment Have Done So Far This Year Is Worth Admiring
Far be it from me to take all the credit for the top line’s awakening last night, but when you put an article in the hopper a day or two before it publishes, you are basically tempting fate to countermand whatever thesis your article was operating under.
Hence, my piece this morning in D Magazine about how the Duchene line has been carrying the Stars through the first fifth of the season. Check it out if you haven’t already, by the way:
Anyway, it’s fitting that the Duchene line would go quiet (though Seguin was another breakaway post away from getting on the board again) the night before this comes out, but if anything I think it only highlights how remarkable that line has been. They really have been fantastic, and Duchene said a couple of really fascinating things when I talked to him on Tuesday about the trio’s chemistry.
Specifically, Duchene mentioned that the trio has no problem disagreeing with each other at times, because they always talk through it and come out stronger on the other side. He mentions how spending time together off the ice is easy when you genuinely like one another, and he also talks about how they decided to make some changes to how the line operated coming into this season as opposed to last year.
And while I never want to hammer age too much when talking about athletes in world-class shape doing things I could never dream of, it’s not ridiculous to point out how remarkable it is that both Duchene and Seguin have weathered the trials of age and injury to be as good as ever, while Marchment has moved out of the role player role to become a main character.
Anyway, give it a read. Maybe next time I need to a file a piece about how I definitely haven’t discovered any unclaimed briefcases full of gold lately, just to see if I can draw the universe off side. It’s worth a shot!
